Lena goes into this downward spiral because she believes she killed her Uncle Macon. He was her father figure in her life, and the night that Lena's mother Sarafine attacked their plantation, in Gatlin, Georgia,  she killed Ethan. Doing so, she hoped that Lena would go dark because of the hate and sadness of her love's death. But, she reads a spell that will bring Ethan back to life, but in doing so, it must take another's life. Not knowing what was to come, she completes the spell, and Macon is to believed to have died.Lena blames herself for his death and detaches herself from everyone else.

Revelation

In the chapter Revelation (6.16 - date), Ethan tries to reach Lena by going to her mansion, and see what's really happening in their relationship. When he gets there he remembers that Lena and her family are leaving town, and moving somewhere else. Her aunts, and grandma greet him with joy, and gramma tells him "Everyone changes, Ethan. That's life," (227).

When he goes up stairs to Lena's room, he realizes her situation is worse then he thought. "Still running but never moving," is written over all of the walls and ceiling, and show her depression is deepening. Ethan tries one last time for her to turn back to him and not to run away with a ,caster/incubus mix, named, John Breed. Lena believes shes going dark so she turns away from him thinking she's saving him.

But Ethan doesn't let that happen.

This is book two, the previous being Beautiful Creatures. In the book, the main character, Ethan Wate, is stuck between two worlds. He, a mortal, is in love with a girl named Lena, who is a caster. A caster is a being that is human but they have powers. There is two kinds of casters, light and dark casters. Light casters always have green eyes, and dark casters have gold eyes.

Lena is called a natural, whiuch means she can control the elements and the things around her, but on her seventeeth birthday, she has to decide to become dark or light. Which ever one she chooses, the opposite casters in her family will all die. Now shes stuck in a perdicament and starts to lean on torward the dark, and pulls unintenionally away from Etah in her confused state.
