In this chapter Ethan learns what the Arc light really is and why his mother wanted him to have it. You learn that when Ethan dies in the first book and Lena trades his life for another Macon really doesn't die. Ethan's mom interferes and traps him in the Arc light so he can help them later on when they need him the most. Ethan finally realizes this when the cross into the Great Barrier and knows they need help. He tries to release him, but can't remember all the words to do so. He asks Liv to help him, knowing the cost. Liv can't take sides as part of her job as a keeper. She can only help, but never give direction. But knowing that they are in grave danger if she doesn't, she continues the unbinding to release Macon.
