First date- 17th summer

In this part of the story, Angie is working in her mother's garden in the front lawn picking vegetables to eat, when she hears Jack behind her asking if they need any doughnuts or pastries ( he works in his father's bakery). She becomes flustered because for a boy to see a girl untidy was to be undignified. He stick around for a little bit and he tells her that he asked for her name when he saw he at McKnight's. He then asks her if she's going steady. Steady means if she's seeing any body regularly, like dating someone. She say no, and he asks if she wants to go sail boating that night. She said she would ask her mother, and he would have his answer by. He said he would call at that time, and say, "No girl has ever been in our boat before so you'll be the first. Something kind of special."
The the next paragraph says; "That was the first time i ever really talked to Jack. When I went back into the garden to get my shoes I noticed how the little tomato plants seemed to be striagtening in the sun. And there were small paper thin blossoms on the new pea plants."  She then goes into her mothers room later on, and asks her if she could go, her mother responds she what your sister (Lorraine) thinks, and fix the curtain. As she headed down stair she heard the phone ring.
Jack and Angie walk out to the lake and he geld her hand when they reached the boat. Jack's friend Swede controlled the boat as they headed out on the lake while Angie and Jack sat on the bow, waiting to find the moon. Jack tried to light his cigarette but could get it to light because of the wind, so Angie put some canvas over their heads to block the wind.  She felt the urge to kiss him, but didn't because she didn't want to be fast "fast" or rude, in case he didn't want to.  He walked her home and Angie could talk because she didn't want to babble, so he said good-night and left.
